Clinch

Breaking the Clinch

Creating space to exit a clinch safely, avoiding strikes or takedowns on the way out.

Key Points

  • •Push and step simultaneously for a clean break
  • •Circling out is safer than a straight retreat
  • •Keep your guard up through the entire separation

Instructions

  1. 1Frame against the opponent's hips, shoulders, or head with your forearms.
  2. 2Push explosively while stepping back with one foot to create distance.
  3. 3Keep your hands up as you separate in case of a follow-up strike.
  4. 4Circle away rather than stepping straight back to avoid being cut off.
  5. 5Reset into your striking stance once separated.
