Clinch

Underhooks

Controlling an opponent's clinch by wrapping your arm under theirs, a strong defensive and offensive position.

Key Points

  • •Underhooks generally beat overhooks for control
  • •Keep your hips close to reduce the opponent's leverage
  • •A double underhook sets up body-lock takedowns

Instructions

  1. 1In the clinch, drive your arm underneath the opponent's arm at the armpit.
  2. 2Wrap your hand around their back or shoulder to secure the position.
  3. 3Keep your head on the same side as your underhook and stay tight to their chest.
  4. 4Use the leverage to control their posture and set up takedowns.
  5. 5Fight to get a second underhook (body lock) if the opponent only has one.
