Jab

A quick, straight punch with the lead hand used to gauge distance, set up combinations, and disrupt an opponent's rhythm.

Key Points

  • •Speed over power
  • •Return to guard immediately
  • •Great range-finder for combinations

Instructions

  1. 1Stand in your fighting stance with hands up, chin tucked, and lead foot slightly forward.
  2. 2Extend your lead arm straight toward the target, rotating your fist so the palm faces down on impact.
  3. 3Pivot your lead foot slightly and rotate your shoulder into the punch for extra reach and power.
  4. 4Snap the punch back to your guard immediately after contact — don't leave it extended.
  5. 5Keep your rear hand up to protect your chin throughout the motion.
