Takedowns

Sprawl

The primary takedown defense — dropping your hips back and down to stop a shot before it lands.

Key Points

  • •Speed and hip drop matter more than strength
  • •Keep your weight distributed forward onto the opponent
  • •Follow up with a front headlock or guillotine opportunity

Instructions

  1. 1As the opponent shoots in, quickly kick both legs back and drop your hips.
  2. 2Drive your hips downward onto the opponent's shoulders or upper back.
  3. 3Keep your weight forward and heavy, flattening them toward the mat.
  4. 4Circle to the side rather than staying square, looking for a front headlock or scramble.
  5. 5Recover to your feet once you've stopped the takedown attempt.
